Sampling (music) - In music, sampling is the act of taking a portion, or sample, of one sound recording and reusing it as an instrument or element of a new recording. This is typically done with a sampler, which can be a piece of hardware or a computer program on a digital computer. Sampling is also possible with tape loops or with vinyl records on a phonograph.(definition from wikipedia online encyclopedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sampling_(music))
Sampling allows artists to create musical textures impossible by live instrumentation. Entire genres of music are based on sampling.
Anyone with proper equipment can technically "sample" a recording, but clearing the legal rights to use it in your new work can be a daunting task.
Without proper clearance, the owners of the original work you sampled can sue for large sums of money or prevent distribution of your album. It doesn't have to be that way!
We'll deal with the publishers and labels, so you don't have to.
